Enhancing Biodiversity at Scott Business Park: Floradex in Action

Collaborative Conservation at Scott Business Park

In partnership with the Wolseley Trust, Pollenize launched a biodiversity monitoring project for 2023-24 aimed at enhancing the site's native wildflower patches and continued monitoring of plant and insect species on site. Through this initiative, we engaged employees and local residents to foster a sense of shared responsibility and connection to the natural environment.

A Data-Driven Approach to Green Space Management

The project utilised the Bioblitz method, an intensive survey designed to capture a snapshot of biodiversity within a defined area over a short period. Using the iNaturalist app, participants recorded plant and insect observations, contributing valuable geo-tagged and time-stamped data to help understand and improve the ecological health of the site.

Methodology and Tools

The project followed a structured approach:

1. Setting up the project in iNaturalist with geofenced boundaries.
2. Conducting regular Bioblitz events to collect data.
3. Analysing observations using the Floradex software.

Floradex provided actionable insights by generating planting prescriptions tailored to the site. These prescriptions suggested trees, shrubs, and flowers that would best support local biodiversity based on extensive databases, including the Plant-Pollinator Interactions Database and the Database of Insects and Their Food Plants.

Project Highlights and Findings

Total pollinator plants observed: 75 of 499 plant-pollinator species have been observed onsite.
Total Identifiers on the project: 111 Identifiers - These are the users who help confirm or suggest identifications for observations, assisting with the accuracy of species identification.
Total pollinators observed: 5 of 485 pollinators observed onsite.

Biodiversity Prescription: A Roadmap for Improvement

Based on the collected data, Floradex prescribed specific plants to support a diverse range of pollinators and other beneficial insects. This roadmap empowers Scott Business Park to make informed decisions on landscaping and green space management to maximise ecological benefits.

The Importance of Workplace Biodiversity

Green spaces in business parks offer more than aesthetic value—they play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, improving air quality, and creating a pleasant environment for employees and visitors. Projects like this demonstrate how businesses can actively contribute to local conservation efforts while reaping the benefits of a healthier and more vibrant environment.
