Healthy Futures - Plymouth Cancer Champions Project

Plymouth Cancer Champions logo

Plymouth Cancer Champions is a 3-year project funded by Macmillan Cancer Support in collaboration with The Wolseley Trust, Age UK and Zebra Collective.

At the heart of the Plymouth Cancer Champions Project is a mission to raise cancer awareness, provide compassionate support, and empower our community through connection and education. The team, trained in trauma-informed care and solution-focused approaches, is working closely with local organizations, faith groups, and individuals to create a network of Cancer Champions—dedicated volunteers who act as “Community Connectors.”

Through initiatives like our Cake and Cuppa Sessions, community events, and tailored social prescribing, we’re breaking down barriers to support and offering people a safe space to talk, share, and learn. Our Social Prescriber has already made meaningful connections, with life-changing feedback such as: “You’ve given me permission to recover.”

With vibrant partnerships, outreach efforts, and innovative programs like cancer cafés, we’re fostering inclusivity, kindness, and hope. Together, we’re building a stronger, more resilient Plymouth community, where no one faces cancer alone.

Join us—follow our journey, attend an event, or become a Cancer Champion!

Some feedback from the Cake and Cuppa session held at the Jan Cutting Healthy Living Centre

  • "I come to the meeting to meet like-minded people with cancer."
  • "It's lovely to talk to different people. We talk about anything, not just cancer."
  • "It's a friendly atmosphere, with a chance to meet people with similar issues, both past and present. All understanding situations with great clarity and understanding than those who haven’t had these experiences.  A great group leader and a brilliant service – thank you."

  • "I come with my husband who had cancer. Everyone is so friendly and kind, which really helps."

  • "I enjoy the company where everyone is friendly and we have all had cancer, and I can get advice if I have any problems. It's great to meet regulars and new people and I've learnt a lot about other cancers, which has been invaluable. My heart is warmed by the group of men who taught me so much about prostate cancer, who have such a wealth of information to pass on to male family members and friends. It's also great to get out of the house regularly and go somewhere that feels warm and welcoming – like a hug, and if there is useful information to share, such as ways to maximise heating for less, people in the group will always pass it on the details. A great place to share community knowledge. "
